Improving real-world results with real-world data for GLP-1s, cardiometabolic care & beyond 

Cardiometabolic disease is an ever-growing public health crisis, spurring the need for better life-changing health insights and innovation at a faster pace. To keep up, biomedical research demands evidence generation that’s designed to represent the real world, providing a continuous perspective that captures the complexity of each individual's real-life health experiences with diabetes, obesity and related cardiometabolic conditions. This participant-centered research registry integrates multi-modal health data to help researchers answer the most pressing questions in contemporary healthcare and medicine, including the challenges starkly highlighted by the often mystified patient journeys with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists — or GLP-1s.

The first drug in the GLP-1 class came to market in 2005 for treatment of type 2 diabetes. Today, GLP-1 medications are still transforming treatment for diabetes, but also obesity, weight loss and other chronic conditions, such as chronic kidney disease, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, and obstructive sleep apnea. Yet even with time and use, the medical industry — payers, providers and innovators like pharmaceutical companies — still have unresolved questions, lacking a clear, contextual view as to why patients struggle with, switch, or stop treatment.

Why? Largely because researchers need more comprehensive, real-world data (RWD) from individuals about their real-world experience and behaviors over time, which is lacking from traditional sources like fragmented electronic health records (EHRs) and static claims. With more ongoing, high-resolution biological and behavioral data streams, researchers could reveal the context behind patient outcomes and cardiometabolic disease, and better understand the effectiveness of new treatments. Experiences with GLP-1 discontinuation is a primary case in point. Standard RWD can answer the what, showing that a prescription wasn’t refilled or that therapy was stopped, but this data may not provide clarity on the reason why. Was it due to significant side effects, perceived lack of efficacy, insurance hurdles, or medication unavailability? 

The lack of context severely limits the ability to modify existing drug regimens, develop programs to improve patient outcomes, and uncover new therapeutic opportunities.

A GLP-1 dilemma: Knowing what vs. Understanding

Focus on Verily’s Cardiometabolic Cohort

Viewpoint Evidence provides continuous insights through easier, ongoing connections with Lifelong Health Study participants for deploying surveys, drawing from a pre-engaged, consented population that is ready for rapid, precise sub-cohort selection. This can advance GLP-1 and cardiometabolic research by reducing the time, cost, and complexity of recruitment and screening, enabling efficiency from study design to real-world insight.

Combined with easier access to integrated clinical, lifestyle/behavioral, and device/wearables data from the Cardiometabolic Cohort, this allows 

researchers and life sciences teams to build a complete picture of cardiometabolic disease progression and use of GLP-1 therapy.

According to Andrew Trister, MD, PhD and Verily Chief Scientific and Medical Officer, “These precision evidence capabilities are necessary to address care challenges in clinical practice and people’s daily lives. For example, let’s consider that 20% of patients on GLP-1 therapies don’t have significant weight loss despite adherence, and genetics offers no clues as to why there is variability in response. Verily can facilitate a study of this left-out cohort, revealing the myriad of reasons for non-response — cost, incorrect usage, side effects, etc. — that are difficult to track using typical health data alone.” 

This high-resolution, continuous data may be valuable to pharmaceutical companies, particularly for GLP-1 research, as it allows monitoring and linking of patient-reported symptoms and side effects, such as specific gastrointestinal side effect profiles, to clinical events and device data. Dr. Trister goes on to explain that this deep understanding enables the refinement of existing GLP-1 treatment, such as through the potential microtitration of GLP-1s to optimize individual patient outcomes and side effect management, such as limiting nausea.

Decoding causes of GLP-1 successes and setbacks

As researchers delve deeper into the mechanisms of action and effects of GLP-1s and related, emergent and next-generation drug classes and formulations, they are expanding investigation on potential applications beyond cardiac and metabolic diseases. A key area focuses on the role of GLP-1s in reducing inflammation. Dr. Lehmann notes, “Since inflammation is believed to drive chronic diseases more generally, and because GLP-1s appear to target inflammatory pathways, they may have very far-reaching uses and health consequences beyond diabetes and weight loss, which is very exciting to me. Verily will help companies unlock pharmacologic applications in these areas, such as connections to longevity research. Basically, the research community believes we’re just at the ‘tip of the iceberg’ in understanding GLP-1 capabilities.”

So as the GLP-1 indications and use expand, so does the need to understand their everyday impact for revealing the mechanisms of disease progression

H5N1 is a type of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) — a virus that typically spreads among birds, and therefore, is commonly known as bird flu. While the current public health risk to humans is considered low, its potential for widespread presence in wild birds, poultry, and dairy cows across the United States requires robust monitoring. This threat highlights the critical role of innovative monitoring methods in safeguarding our communities, such as Verily’s wastewater monitoring, and holistic strategies like One Health.

One Health is an integrated approach that recognizes the ways the health of humans is closely connected to that of animals and our shared environments. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) emphasize that the well-being of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants and the wider ecosystem are interdependent, encouraging experts across different fields to work together to improve health for all.



The need for a collaborative approach has become more urgent in recent years as human populations grow and expand into new areas, increasing our contact with both wild and domestic animals. In turn, changes in climate and land use increase the risks of diseases passing between animals, and from animals to people. These threats, known as zoonotic diseases, require a targeted approach that addresses the full spectrum of disease control — from prevention and detection, to preparedness and response.



Implementing comprehensive One Health programs is challenging because the responsibility is split across many stakeholders. For example, in the U.S., state and federal health departments, state and federal wildlife officials, county park agencies, CDC preparedness assignees, U.S. military public health, and state and federal marine mammal experts all have a significant role to play in monitoring and responding to zoonotic health threats. This division between overseeing wildlife, livestock and human health underscores why pandemics often emerge at the boundaries of those jurisdictions.

Wastewater monitoring has emerged as a powerful tool in public health monitoring, providing early warning signals, and tracking spatial and temporal trends of diseases within communities. By testing wastewater samples, public health officials can monitor for seasonal diseases, detect new threats, and evaluate the impact of interventions implemented to prevent transmission.

Wastewater monitoring: An 
early warning system

In the spring of 2024, after detecting unusually high levels of influenza A in wastewater, Verily developed and implemented a specific assay to detect the H5 subtype. The value of that assay was demonstrated in Hawaii in November 2024 when Influenza A (H5) was detected in wastewater from Honolulu County. This was the first detection of the H5 virus in the state.

This early warning immediately triggered a response, starting with rapid coordination between state and federal agencies to disseminate public news releases. Within 48 hours, the public health investigation linked the wastewater finding to a backyard flock, allowing containment and an assessment of human exposure. Thanks to the state public health and agricultural departments’ rapid response, no human cases were detected.

Verily-led consortium secures $9.2M NIH award extension for platform to advance systems biology research

Dallas, TX – December 18, 2025 – A data and technology consortium led by 

the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, DataTecnica, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Sage Bionetworks, Technome,

 has secured a two-year renewal for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) System Biology (SysBio) award, totaling $9.2 million. This continued funding builds on the 

 announced in 2024.

The additional funding will further the development and implementation of the FAIRplex platform, designed to empower researchers to efficiently find, access, and analyze data from Accelerating Medicines Partnership® (AMP®) projects, fostering a deeper understanding of the systems biology underpinning health and disease. The focus for this next phase shifts from foundational development to operational readiness and deeper integration with key AMP® projects.



, a public private partnership from NIH, the Foundation for NIH (FNIH), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), industry, and advocacy organizations, covers a vast range of diseases, including 

. The multimodal datasets within the platform include phenotypic, clinical, molecular, and patient-reported outcomes data.

This renewal signifies the NIH’s continued commitment to the collaborative FAIRplex initiative, recognizing the significant progress made by the consortium organizations in Year 1. The partners will continue to build and refine a production system that offers:



The partners will also advance security and governance protocols, while continuing to conduct user testing and outreach to ensure impact for the broader scientific community. While initially built for AMP® projects, the work can be adapted for use across other datasets from NIH and external partners, providing the same benefits of curation, governance, and access, and leading to broader data access for greater research impact.

Dallas, TX - October 28, 2025 - Verily, a precision health AI company, today announced a collaboration with NVIDIA to integrate NVIDIA’s AI technology stack into its 

 platform, which is used by health system, life science, payer, and government customers and partners to more efficiently develop and deploy AI across healthcare.

Verily has added NVIDIA’s GPU-accelerated libraries and frameworks, including 

, Verily’s trusted research environment (TRE). Researchers also now have access to some of the latest GPUs including 

. This integration has shown to greatly accelerate analyses, from hours to minutes, when using Parabricks and B200 to process genomic data as compared to traditional, CPU-only methods. 

This effort will accelerate analyses within the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) 

, which will be powered by Pre through Verily’s 

 with Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The All of Us Researcher Workbench hosts one of the world’s largest genomics datasets and supports nearly 20,000 registered researchers globally.

In addition to the Workbench integration, Verily plans to make NVIDIA GPU-accelerated microservices, libraries, and frameworks available for use across other Pre solutions. This includes 

, a powerful curation engine that ingests, harmonizes, and enriches multimodal data, using a clinically informed, FHIR-native data model to transform unstructured data into structured data assets, and 

, a secure forum for sharing and accessing AI-ready datasets, models, and agents to advance precision research and care.

As a demonstration of the power of the Pre platform enhanced with NVIDIA AI tools, Verily's researchers have developed the first 

 Research Program dataset. The model integrates electronic health records (EHR) and genomics through polygenic risk scores, moving beyond traditional EHR-only approaches to build a more holistic individual health profile, enabling new insights into disease prediction and proactive health management. Using NVIDIA NeMo Automodel and H100 GPUs Verily researchers were able to train the model 10x faster than previous approaches.

Verily Launches a New Consumer Health App, Verily Me, at HLTH USA 2025 

Dallas, TX - October 17, 2025 - Verily, a precision health AI company, today announced the launch of a new consumer health app, Verily Me, that will be featured at HLTH USA 2025. Verily Me is designed to close gaps in care and enable people to stay informed and engaged in their health journey over time.
