Verily Health Provides Wastewater Monitoring and Data Analytics to Safeguard Public Health During the 2026 World Soccer Games
Verily joins health security coalition to monitor for infectious disease threats across North America
Dallas, TX – May 15, 2026 – Verily Health today announced it will provide its comprehensive wastewater monitoring solution, Sightline, and its trusted research environment, Verily Workbench, as part of a coalition effort to protect public health during the 2026 world soccer games.
To help prepare for an anticipated 6.5 million fans across 16 North American sites, Verily has joined the Health Security Operations Center (HSOC), which is part of the National Center for Health Security and Resilience, a collaboration between Georgetown University and MedStar Health. The HSOC, which is located at Georgetown University, functions as a hub for monitoring potential infectious disease threats and supports the mitigation of global health risks.
Verily will test wastewater samples for pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza, RSV, norovirus, and measles, and aggregate wastewater data from additional sources. Verily will provide a public-facing dashboard on its website that will go live in early June, to share regular updates on pathogen trends in game and basecamp locations. The website will also feature analysis from Katelyn Jetelina, PhD, MPH, of Your Local Epidemiologist, to translate findings into clear, actionable guidance for the public.
The HSOC will use Verily Workbench, a collaborative analysis tool built on Verily’s precision health platform, Pre, to analyze the wastewater data alongside other multimodal data sources, informing public health responses and enabling the development of daily situation reports which will be issued to over 350 organizations and individuals. Samsung Electronics America is providing operations center researchers with the latest tech hardware, including smartphones, tablets, PCs, wearables and more, to display data and enable real-time collaboration and rapid response.
"We are proud to convene this coalition to help address the complex public health challenges that can emerge as millions of people travel throughout North America this summer," said Rebecca Katz, PhD, MPH, Director of Georgetown's Center for Global Health Science and Security and Director of the Health Security Operations Center. “By bringing together expertise from across sectors, including Verily's wastewater monitoring data and analytics capabilities, we can provide the timely, actionable insights to help public health officials assess evolving situations and respond confidently if a risk emerges.”
Verily has extensive experience performing high-sensitivity testing with Verily Sightline, having worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 2023, as well as various state and local health departments, and provides the lab testing services for the WastewaterSCAN program. Verily has delivered more than 1M pathogen results since 2020 and provides over 90% detection sensitivity for active infections in the community.
“By bringing together Verily’s leading edge science and technical capabilities through our Sightline and Workbench solutions, we can help public health agencies protect entire communities with timely and precise data during the games,” said Stephen Gillett, CEO of Verily. “This collaborative effort demonstrates how data-driven insights can help monitor for potential infectious disease threats to safeguard public health.”
Wastewater monitoring serves as a cost-effective, non-invasive method to detect outbreaks early, allowing public health officials to better understand disease transmission and respond to potential risks.
“We want anyone coming to the games to feel confident they're in a safe environment — and that if something were emerging, we'd know about it early and act fast. Wastewater monitoring gives us that early warning, and pairing it with the Health Security Operations Center's analytical expertise means our local public health teams can get ahead of any risk before it affects residents or visitors,” said Katelyn Jetelina, PhD, MPH.
