One Brave Idea

Extraordinary grant funding to advance the fight against coronary heart disease

What is One Brave Idea?

One Brave Idea is a research initiative uncovering new approaches to preventing and treating coronary heart disease (CHD). The initiative is founded on a $75 million research grant, provided by Verily, the American Heart Association and AstraZeneca. Dr. Calum MacRae, chief of cardiovascular medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, was selected as the winner of the grant in 2016 and is studying the molecular events surrounding the earliest transition from wellness to disease in CHD with the support of a broad, multidisciplinary team.

How are you making it happen?

We envisioned One Brave Idea as a way to develop new models for innovative scientific research. The research initiative brings together diverse organizations with significant resources to move the needle on the global problem of CHD. The $75 million grant is currently directed toward an ambitious approach to CHD and its consequences. Our hope is that this initiative will catalyze similar grants that provide rapid and durable funding for life-saving cardiovascular research.
