Smart Lens Program
What is the smart lens program?
Verily and Alcon are working on smart ocular devices, including a glucose-sensing lens for continuous monitoring of glucose levels and an accommodating contact lens for people with presbyopia (age-related farsightedness). This ambitious program represents one of our strategies for helping patients: adding intelligence to objects that people use routinely in their everyday lives.
How are you making it happen?
These soft contact lenses contain tiny Verily-designed integrated circuits, sensors, and wireless communication capabilities for self-contained wireless sensing on the surface of the eye. The team has been working to engineer novel solutions to the technical challenges of significant miniaturization for autonomous sensing systems and dramatic reduction of power consumption to permit tiny batteries. We are working hand-in-hand with Alcon on biocompatible materials, optics and clinical development. This work requires a cross-functional team of people from different disciplines, including chip design, mechanical engineering, optics design, microfabrication, electrochemistry and manufacturing.Learn more in our newsroom
