What is Virtual Stainer?

Virtual Stainer by Verily is an end-to-end platform for mapping the molecular geography of tissue biopsies that are commonly taken during routine clinical care for certain diseases. Verily and Allergan are employing this platform to understand the liver biology of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) with a new level of resolution in order to obtain a more quantitative and comprehensive understanding of this disease's pathological processes.

How are you making it happen?

Virtual Stainer brings together a suite of Verily technologies and expertise from our molecular, clinical, hardware, and software teams. The platform employs novel imaging techniques collected using home-grown hyperspectral microscopes optimized for high sensitivity and rapid scanning. High-resolution data from these microscopes are then processed using advanced image analytics to computationally predict histological staining. Through this process, Virtual Stainer can extract more information and annotate each sample without exhausting the original tissue. Our first application of this platform is to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) research in an ongoing collaboration with Allergan. By using histopathological data collected at different timepoints from clinical studies performed by Allergan, this effort will attempt to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis, disease staging and assessment of liver biopsies.
